IV Sedation at The Dentist: What to Expect During Your Procedure

The dentist is placing a blanket over the patient in the dental chair so they stay warm for their IV Sedation procedure

Whether you need a routine filling, a tooth extraction, or a cosmetic dental procedure like veneers, fear of the dentist may make it difficult for you to get the care you need. And if you suffer from dental anxiety, you’re far from alone! Polls show that up to 73% of U.S. adults experience some level of anxiety when visiting the dentist.

The good news is that the team at Grove City Smiles is here to help. Led by Dr. Michael Pappas, our team of dentists offers deep IV sedation in a comfortable, welcoming environment. Sometimes called “twilight sedation” due to its effects, IV sedation lets you sleep comfortably through your entire visit and get the expert care you need, reducing both anxiety and discomfort.

What is IV Sedation?

As the name suggests, IV sedation uses a variety of powerful sedatives that are delivered right into your bloodstream through a needle. These drugs are similar to those used for pill-based oral sedation.

However, since they do not need to be digested and are injected right into the veins, the sedatives used in IV sedation have deeper, stronger, and longer-lasting effects. However, it’s important to note that you will not be “knocked out,” unlike with general anesthesia.

While you will still be conscious and able to respond to commands, if needed, you will be very sleepy and groggy under IV sedation. It’s quite common for patients to sleep through their entire visit and remember almost nothing about their procedure at Grove City Smiles.

Why Choose IV Sedation for Dental Work? The Benefits

Wondering about the IV sedation benefits that may make it a good choice for your needs? Whether you’re restoring missing teeth, getting extractions, or you’re interested in cosmetic dental work, getting IV sedation from Grove City Smiles is a great way to reduce anxiety and make you feel more comfortable in the dentist’s chair. Here are just a few benefits:

  • Eliminate dental anxiety – Since you’ll sleep through your entire visit and be mostly unaware of what’s happening around you, you’ll be able to get through your treatment at Grove City Smiles with less anxiety and discomfort.
  • Stay comfortable during lengthy procedures – Some dental visits can be quite long, especially if you’re having multiple teeth extracted or you’re getting a full mouth of dental implants. IV sedation lets you relax and get through even the longest dental chair sessions with ease.
  • Manage your gag reflex – Along with its anti-anxiety benefits, IV sedation helps impair your gag reflex. This makes it easier for your dentist to provide the care you need, particularly if your rear teeth need treatment.
  • Faster, more efficient treatment – Since you’ll be asleep and won’t be nervous or moving around, IV sedation lets Dr. Pappas and his team of dentists offer faster, more efficient restorative and cosmetic dental care.

Preparing For IV Sedation – What You Should Know

If you’re interested in IV sedation in Grove City, OH, you may be wondering what to expect and how to qualify for this method of sedation. Here’s a quick overview of what to expect from Dr. Pappas and our dentists:

Pre-sedation consultation

If you’re interested in IV sedation during your next visit, just let our team know during your consultation! As part of the process, your dentist will need to ask you about a few things to make sure that you’re a good candidate. This typically includes:

  • A full medical history, including a review of any chronic health conditions
  • Information about past surgeries
  • A list of allergies
  • All prescription medications and supplements you’re taking

Together, this information helps your dentist ensure that you can be sedated safely with an IV. And if you’re not a good candidate for IV sedation, other options like oral conscious sedation and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) may still be available to you!

Day of your dental visit

Your dentist will provide you with a full list of instructions to follow before your visit. Most importantly, you will usually need to fast (avoid eating and drinking) for at least 6-8 hours before your visit.

You will also need a trusted adult to drive you to and from Grove City Smiles, such as a spouse, partner, or close friend. This is because IV sedation impairs your ability to operate cars and heavy machinery for several hours, so you will not be allowed to drive yourself home after your visit.

Explaining The IV Sedation Process

Whether you’re getting IV sedation for a restorative procedure like a dental implant or a cosmetic procedure like veneers, the process will be the same. Here’s what you can expect once you arrive at our office in Grove City:

  • Placing your IV – We will begin by placing some monitoring equipment around you to keep an eye on your vital signs. Then, one of our team members will clean the injection site and place an IV needle in a vein in your arm or hand. Then, they will attach the IV line to a bag containing a mixture of sedative medication and saline.

  • Sedation begins – When it’s time for your procedure to start, the IV drip will begin. The sedative medication will enter your bloodstream and begin taking effect almost immediately. You will feel very groggy, “out of it,” and relaxed. As the sedation flow continues, you will fall asleep.
  • Dental work continues – Once you’re fully sedated, your dental procedure will begin. Along with IV sedation, we will use local anesthetic to numb the treatment area and ensure that you feel absolutely no pain or discomfort.

  • Finishing up – Time will pass very quickly while you’re “under” with IV sedation. Once your procedure is over, our team will continue to monitor your vital signs as you begin to wake up. Then, when everything looks good, we will send you home to rest and recover.

Recovery And Care Steps After IV Sedation

After IV sedation, side effects are typically mild and wear off within a few hours. As you recover, you may experience:

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Grogginess
  • Dry mouth

These symptoms typically last for just a few hours, but some may linger for up to 24 hours. Once you’re released from our office, you will need an adult to drive you home and keep an eye on you for several hours, as mentioned previously.

We recommend taking time off from work or school so that you can recover for the rest of the day. Most patients are able to resume all of their normal activities by the next day, so you won’t be out of it for long!
