What Is A Dental Crown? Understanding The Basics

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped "cap" that's designed to cover up and protect a damaged, decayed, or otherwise compromised tooth. Crowns surround the entire tooth all the way to the gum line, effectively replacing the natural enamel and providing excellent protection from future decay and damage.

While they do have some cosmetic benefits, dental crowns are typically considered to be a restorative dental treatment. Here are a few situations where a dental crown may be recommended by Dr. Pappas and the dentists at Grove City Smiles:

  • Restoring severely decayed teeth that can't be treated with fillings
  • Covering up teeth after root canal therapy to treat a dental infection
  • Replacing large, worn-out fillings in teeth that require further strengthening
  • Repairing teeth after dental trauma causes a crack, deep chip, or broken tooth
  • Treating teeth that have been worn down by bruxism (teeth grinding) or other causes of serious tooth wear

The Benefits Of Restoring A Tooth With A Dental Crown

  • Eliminate pain and discomfort: A decayed, infected, and damaged tooth can cause serious pain that may interrupt your day-to-day life. With a crown, you can eliminate discomfort and get back to your routine.
  • Restore your smile and appearance: At Grove City Smiles, we primarily provide tooth-colored ceramic crowns, and our dentists use the latest digital design tools to create amazing results that fit in perfectly with your natural teeth.
  • Unbeatable protection for your tooth: Crowns are the best way to cover up and protect teeth that have been compromised by dental trauma, extensive cavities, tooth infections, and more.
  • Prevent further damage and complications: Getting a crown right away may help you avoid complications like tooth infections in the future. You'll get valuable peace of mind, knowing that your smile will stay healthy and bright.
  • Save time and money compared to other treatments: Since you'll reduce your risk of further complications, you'll also save time and money when you choose a crown. We offer transparent pricing and monthly financing at Grove City Smiles, and we accept most dental insurance policies, too!

The Most Common Types of Dental Crowns

There are a few different dental crown types that may be recommended by your dentist at Grove City Smiles. The right choice depends on your budget, the location of your damaged tooth, your aesthetic preferences, and a few other factors. We'll always help you choose the crown type that's right for you.

CEREC Same-Day Ceramic Crowns (Most Common)

Our CEREC same-day ceramic crowns are the preferred choice for most patients at Grove City Smiles. Made from high-quality porcelain or zirconia, these crowns are very similar to natural enamel in color, translucency, strength, and overall appearance.

Using our in-house CEREC manufacturing technology, we can create a realistic, lifelike ceramic crown in just one appointment. This eliminates the need for temporary crowns and multiple visits, making it the most convenient option for busy patients.

Metal Dental Crowns

Gold dental crowns and crowns made from other metals are not as common today due to their unnatural appearance. However, metal crowns are still very strong, durable, and flexible. They're a particularly good choice for back molars, which are not typically visible when you smile and have to withstand the highest biting and chewing forces.

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns

PFM crowns use a metal base with a porcelain "shell" that imitates the natural color and appearance of your teeth. PFM crowns combine the durability of metal with the natural appeal of ceramic crowns, so this is a great type of dental crown for both front and back teeth.

The main drawback of PFM crowns is that they must be made in a dental lab, so it will take at least two visits to Grove City Smiles to restore your tooth. Some dental conditions like gum recession can also reveal the metal part of the crown near the gumline, leading to reduced aesthetic appeal.

The Dental Crown Process – What To Expect

Most of our crown cases can be completed in one appointment using our advanced CEREC technology. Only in rare cases do we need to use traditional lab-made crowns that require multiple visits. Here's what to expect from both processes:

Same-Day Crown Process (Most Common)

Initial consultation: First, you'll meet with one of the dentists at Grove City Smiles to make sure that a crown is right for you. Your dentist will examine your mouth, take X-rays, discuss your restorative options with you, and make sure you make the right choice for your needs, preferences, and budget.

Preparation and tooth shaping: We'll clean and numb your mouth, then use a dental drill to remove any decayed or damaged tooth material. Then, we'll shape your tooth into a strong, stable platform for your new crown.

Digital impressions: At Grove City Smiles, we use a hand-held scanner to take an accurate 3D image of your teeth with no goopy impressions required. Once we finish your scan, it will be uploaded into our digital smile planning software.

Crown creation: Your dentist will use this scan to design your crown, then upload the design into our CEREC machine. This machine will carve the finished crown shape out of a solid block of ceramic material while you wait.

Final placement: Once your crown is ready, your dentist will place it on your tooth temporarily, check your bite, and make sure the fit looks right. They can make any last-minute adjustments, if needed. Then, once the crown fits perfectly alongside your natural teeth, your dentist will permanently bond it into place with powerful, long-lasting dental cement.

Traditional Lab-Made Crown Process (Rare Cases)

In the small percentage of cases where same-day crowns aren't suitable, we'll follow the traditional process. After preparation and digital impressions, you'll receive a temporary crown to protect your tooth. Your dentist will finish the crown design and send it to a lab where it will be crafted by an experienced technician. This process takes 2-3 weeks, after which you'll return for final placement.

Dental Crown Longevity And Lifespan – What To Expect

Along with the type of dental crown you choose, its longevity and lifespan depends on a few other factors, such as the skill and expertise of your dentist and how well you care for your smile. Generally speaking, you can expect the following lifespan from your crown:

  • 10-15 years for all-ceramic crowns
  • 10-20 years for PFM (porcelain-fused-to-metal) crowns
  • 20-30 years for gold and metal crowns

Once your crown does wear out, it will need to be replaced by a dentist as soon as possible to prevent complications like tooth decay and infections. This is one of the reasons why it's important to visit Grove City Smiles every six months for a checkup. Your dentist can check on your crown to make sure it's healthy, strong, and still providing proper protection for your tooth.

Our Tips For Maintaining Your New Dental Crown

Proper post-dental crown care is essential for preserving your new tooth and making the most of your investment in your smile. Not sure what steps you'll need to take? Here are some simple tips that will help you ensure the longest possible lifespan for your crown.

  • Maintain great oral hygiene: Make sure you brush twice daily for two minutes, floss once per day, and use alcohol-free mouthwash to freshen your breath and kill oral bacteria.
  • Watch what you eat: Cut back on sugary foods and drinks to keep your teeth and crown healthy. You should also reduce your intake of super sticky, gummy, and crunchy foods to avoid damaging or dislodging your crown.
  • Don't chew on ice or non-food objects: Chewing on ice can damage your crown or natural teeth. You also should not chew on fingernails, pens, pencils, or any other type of non-food object.
  • Never use teeth as tools: Do not use your teeth to hold nails, tear open tape, rip open packages, or for any other similar purpose.
  • Stop smoking, vaping, or using other nicotine/tobacco products: All types of tobacco and nicotine use are bad for your natural teeth and gums, raising your risk of both gum disease and tooth decay. Both of these conditions can result in the premature damage or loss of dental work like crowns and fillings, too.
  • Get regular dental checkups: Make sure you visit your dentist at Grove City Smiles every six months for a checkup and teeth cleaning. Our team will check your natural teeth and your crown to make sure your smile is in perfect shape.
